The true cost of motherhood

New research by Tesco magazine has found the true value of a Mum’s worth – and it’s a staggering £1,425,104 per child from birth to 18.  In the course of one child’s life, a mother will spend over 88,000 hours child minding, which equates to more than £600,000.  The average wage for a registered childminder is £3.54 per hour during the day, which can leap to £10 per hour for after-school care.  This works out as an average of £6.77 per hour.

We think this puts into perspective the amount of time and money parents spend raising their children and the duty we have as employers to give mothers and fathers as much help as possible. Childcare vouchers can be central to this, emphasising that employers care about their working  parents.

Managers should be letting their staff know that changes to childcare vouchers are due in April 2011.  This will mean that certain parents will lose out on significant savings if they do not sign up now.

We all know that mums are priceless, but we do think that if there is a way we can help the working parents in the UK during these tough economic times, then we should take every opportunity.
